Majority of adults who still have their teeth are found to have periodontal disease or infection of the gums and the bone which supports the teeth. It has been clear that bacterial plaque or bacteria in the oral cavity has been the cause of periodontal or gum disease. The initiation and progress of gum infection can be modified by several factors. One of these risk factors is smoking which can make gum disease even more worse. Most cases of of advanced gum disease are attributable to cigarette smoking. Smokers are high risk for gum disease than to those who do not smoke. Smoking and tobacco use can reduce the effectiveness of the body’s ability to be able to battle infections. More aggressive gum disease-causing bacteria most likely infects smokers. With this condition, smokers must quit the bad habit earlier in prevention of tooth loss and other health conditions.
